06 Cocktails of tears
March 2023
A pop-up experimental cocktail bar that enables us to rethink our relationship with alcohol as a medium to deal with strong emotions.
After studying the correlation between the sense of
smell and our internal feelings, tears were found to be not only a visual, but also a chemical signifier of our emotions: tears can be smelled! The chemical composition of each tear changes based on the mood that produced it, which was also found to prominently change the behavioral response of the person that smells it. This sparked a reflection on how we deal with strong emotional states, often wanting to mask or forgetting them through alcohol. Social constructs encourage alcohol usage as a way to escape reality, to become more confident or to not be present living the moment. Therefore I created a special pair of goggles for the collection of tears in special vials, which are later
connected to a special set of cocktail cups filled with a variety of alcohol-free recipes: enabling an emotional link with the drink and turning drinking into a moment of presence or reconnection with the self. A variety of smells connected to the cocktails are collected from various forms of emotions, with a menu that allows you to choose which emotion you would want to deal with.
